This restoration project was completed for the Nomadic Charitable Trust to restore the SS Nomadic to its original 1911 status.
The project included the Design & Build of the Interpretive Fit-out Contract Works in conjunction with our interpretive Designers Tandem Design & our specialist interpretive fit-out supply chain.
The SS Nomadic was built in 1910 – 1911 for the White Star Line to carry out the role of ferrying passengers, their baggage, mail and ship’s stores to and from ocean liners, particularly the Line’s Olympic Class RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic. SS Nomadic is listed on the core collection of the National Historic Ships register and has a status equivalent to that of a Grade A Listed Building. The vessel is also the only floating survivor of the Titanic era of transatlantic liners, and the last surviving White Star Line vessel in the world.
Tracey Brothers Ltd commenced works on the final phase of the restoration in April 2012 with works extended to Hamilton Dock where the vessel is dry docked and the adjacent Pump House building.
Works included outfitting of the SS Nomadic, upgrading of the ship interior including restoration of existing internal linings as well as reinstallation of previously salvaged materials such as cinema seating, timber panelling. Works to Hamilton Graving dock included reinstatement of hard standing areas, extensive stonework repairs, brickwork repairs to dock walls & new railing system. Works on Pump House building included external restoration & reconstruction of original Pump House building and upgrading of existing interior to provide an information/ticket area & exhibition/gallery space
In conjunction with Tandem Design, an audio-visual interpretative installation was designed & installed to relay the stories of SS Nomadic & Hamilton Dock to visitors. We led the design process in conjunction with interpretive design specialists, Tandem & ensured that all key stakeholders including The Nomadic Charitable Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund & International Fund for Ireland. Also a wider steering group of experts were consulted & involved in the development of the interpretive strategy, e.g. Nomadic Preservation Society, NIEA, Belfast Harbour Commissioners etc. & design was subject to agreement with Nomadic Charitable Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund, CPD & client Design Advisers.
